A visit to Auschwitz is a unique and moving experience, leading through some of the most significant places in 20th century history. The entrance is marked by the iconic inscription “Arbeit Macht Frei,” a symbol of the tragic irony that distinguishes the camp.

Auschwitz I

Auschwitz I, the first site in the complex, has several sections of relevant historical interest.

Block 4 documents the Nazi extermination through maps, records, and photographs. Here it is possible to see original objects, such as pylons woven from human hair, and evidence of the brutality of the gas chambers. Continuing on, in Block 5, are objects seized from deportees, such as suitcases, eyeglasses and shoes, symbols of a spoliation that obliterated the identity of the prisoners.

Block 6 offers an insight into the daily life of the prisoners, with photographs, documents and paintings showing the terrible living conditions. One room is devoted to deported children, whose tragic stories of exploitation and death are told with pictures and exhibits. In Block 7, the dormitories and poor sanitary conditions are observed, with multiple beds and unhealthy facilities aggravating the already difficult environment.

Block 10 introduces the medical experiments conducted by Josef Mengele, testimony to the scientific atrocities perpetrated on children, twins and other categories of prisoners. Next to it, the Wall of Death, between Block 10 and Block 11, recalls the shootings and torture suffered by the inmates.

Block 11, known as “Death Block,” contains the cells where prisoners awaited execution. This is where the first experiments in mass killings with gas, later used in the gas chambers, were carried out. The visit concludes with the gas chamber and crematorium, sites of extermination and destruction of thousands of lives, tangible evidence of the brutality of the Nazi regime.

Auschwitz II – Birkenau

The visit continues to Auschwitz II – Birkenau, located about 3 km from Auschwitz I and reached by a convenient free shuttle bus or, in milder months, on foot. This camp, the largest in the complex, covers 175 hectares and housed more than 300 barracks, only a few of which remain standing today: 22 wooden and 45 brick. Living conditions were inhumane, aggravated by a lack of water and often muddy and unhealthy soil. The masonry barracks lacked foundations, while the wooden barracks, originally stables, housed up to 400 inmates each.

Among the most significant sites are the remains of the crematoria and gas chambers, destroyed by the SS in an attempt to hide evidence of crimes. Oven number four was partially demolished by prisoners during an uprising in October 1944. Near the ovens stands the International Monument in Memory of Victims of Nazi-Fascism, unveiled in 1967, commemorating the millions of people exterminated there.

The railway track and the Watchtower represent other crucial points. Trains loaded with deportees arrived here, many of whom did not survive the journey. Upon arrival, prisoners were subjected to selection: the weakest were sent directly to the gas chambers, while the others destined for forced labor.

Auschwitz-Birkenau is located in the town of Oświęcim, Poland, and is easily accessible from Krakow, Katowice and even Warsaw.

The distance from Kraków is about 70 km, which can be covered in just over an hour by car or cab, or by train or bus with regular connections.

Oświęcim station is only 2 km from the site, making it also accessible on foot or by local bus.

For those leaving from Katowice, the trip is shorter: 45 minutes by car or cab and a little more by train. Warsaw, further away, takes about 3½ hours by car or 4 hours by train.

Parking is available near the entrance, and for those who prefer convenience, there are organized tours that include transportation, priority ticket and guide.

Booking in advance is essential to avoid long waits and ensure a peaceful experience at this place of deep historical memory.

Opening and visiting hours

The opening hours of the Auschwitz museum-camp vary throughout the year, adapting to the length of days and weather conditions.

Itis possible to visit the site every day, with the exception of Christmas, Easter and New Year’s Day.

In colder months, such as December, the camp is accessible from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., while in January and November the hours extend to 4:30 p.m. In February the site closes at 5:30 p.m., while in March and October the hours extend to 6:30 p.m.

During the spring and fall months, April, May, and September, it is open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., while in the summer months of June, July, and August the hours extend until 8:30 p.m.

Last admission is allowed an hour and a half before closing, but for a complete experience it is recommended that at least three and a half hours be devoted to the visit.
